A spectrum in which the intensity of radiation changes only gradually with wavelength, in contrast with the sharp peaks of intensity found in an emission line spectrum. Any body with a temperature above absolute zero emits a continuous spectrum, the character of which depends on its temperature. A continuous spectrum may be crossed by narrow absorption lines, as in the Sun's spectrum, for example. See also: black body radiation, thermal radiation. |
